Hello, there.

Next year, 12 November 2026 will mark the 90th anniversary of the Emperor Norton Bridge.

This includes Yerba Buena Tunnel — which is:

(a) the architectural linchpin of the bridge

(b) the part of the bridge that responds to the Emperor's specific call, in his three "bridge Proclamations" of 1872, for a bridge connecting Oakland and San Francisco "via Goat Island" — which we know today as Yerba Buena Island.

The 90th anniversary of the bridge affords a wonderful opportunity for the California state legislature to finally put the Emperor's name on his bridge — by naming Yerba Buena Tunnel

EMPEROR NORTON TUNNEL

This proposal to name Yerba Buena Tunnel after Emperor Norton deftly sidesteps two major hurdles that always have complicated the effort to name the entire San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge — with its one foot in San Francisco and the other in Oakland — after the Emperor, a San Francisco-identified figure.

To wit, the tunnel is:

(a) Located on Yerba Buena Island — which is completely within the City and County of San Francisco

(b) Not named after any other person — indeed, not officially named at all

Cheers!
