Hi, there.
The Emperor Norton Bridge opened as the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge on 12 November 1936.
The bridge turns 85 this coming Friday.
By way of a birthday present, The Emperor Norton Trust is hoping by Friday the 12th to clear 6,500 signatures on our petition calling on the California state legislature simply to add "Emperor Norton Bridge" as an honorary name for the bridge as a whole — leaving in place all existing names for the bridge and its parts ("spans," tunnel, etc.).
We're urging state lawmakers to do this in 2022 — the 150th anniversary of the Emperor's three newspaper Proclamations, in 1872, setting out the original vision for the bridge — and, we're preparing to ramp up our appeal, in the hope of finally getting the Emperor's name on his bridge in the year of this historic anniversary.
As of this writing, we're only 67 signatures away from 6,500.
Please help us hit this mark! Share the petition with any Emperor-saluting friends who have yet to sign, and urge them to join you in signing.
Thanks so much!
