What: The Senate bill (SF 3899) to name the state office building after Rep. Melissa Hortman will be heard in the Minnesota Senate State and Local Government Committee this Tuesday, March 17th at 12:30 p.m. I will be testifying on behalf of the bill and sharing the petition again. While your name carries weight, so does your voice! Senators need to hear from the people about the importance of this permanent recognition to Speaker Emerita Hortman.
How you can help:
Contact any or all members of the committee and urge them to support the bill. If you live in one of their districts, this is even more important!

- Share why this issue matters to you. What would naming the office building after Melissa mean to you and our state?
- Emphasize that this should not be a partisan issue. The political violence that took place last summer affected all Minnesotans and many beyond our state.
- Melissa worked across the aisle for all Minnesotans. (One of her last votes was an especially hard vote to avoid a government shutdown.)
Why this is important: Naming the state office building for Melissa would create a living tribute to the work that was so important to her to improve the quality of life for all Minnesotans. Lawmakers and the public would have a daily reminder of Melissa's efforts to make Minnesota a better place for everyone-- efforts that can inspire us all to carry the work forward.
Update on House Companion Bill (HF 3455): On March 12, the State Government Policy and Finance Committee approved the bill, moving it out of committee. It will now be heard by the Ways and Means Committee. If you would like to hear the remarks made on March 12, here's a summary with video.
Let’s keep the momentum going as the bills make their way through committees. Your voice matters! Melissa spoke up for us; let’s speak up for her.
Thank you again for your support and advocacy around this effort.
Much love,
~Jodi
