People with intellectual and developmental disabilities are often overlooked, especially when it comes to public recognition for their talents. My godmother, Dr. Margaret "Muggy Do” Dickinson, dedicated her life to changing that. She was the first to bring performers with intellectual disabilities onto public stages, allowing them to shine at the White House, Strathmore, Lincoln Theater, and other iconic venues.

As CEO and program director of the Art and Drama Therapy Institute (ADTI) in Washington, D.C., Dr. Do built programs that earned local, national, and international acclaim. Among her proudest achievements was founding the Inspirational Choir & Moroccan Ensemble, a choir of musicians with diverse vocal ranges and mastery of multiple instruments, providing students a platform to perform and be celebrated for their abilities.

She empowered individuals to express themselves, build confidence, and belong to a community that celebrated their gifts. She loved her “sweethearts” for who they were, not how the world saw them. Walking alongside her showed me how inclusion and opportunity can transform lives.

We want to honor her legacy by renaming the street where Art & Drama Therapy Institute once stood in her name. This tribute will celebrate her groundbreaking work and inspire future generations to uplift people with intellectual disabilities.

Please join us in honoring Dr. Do by signing this petition and keeping her vision alive in the Washington, D.C. community she so greatly impacted.
