Preservation of Valla Beach Nature Reserve

Preservation of Valla Beach Nature Reserve
Nambucca Council proposes to reclassify Lot 45, at 99 & 101 Ocean View Drive, which is currently designated COMMUNITY LAND to OPERATIONAL LAND, allowing it to be completely cleared for development.
This Land is part of the Valla Beach Nature Reserve and should not be touched - Lot 45 is a natural wildlife corridor that needs to be preserved.
Key issues here are:
- Previous Councils designated Lot 45 as Community Land for good reasons that have not changed, as the community has repeatedly expressed a desire to retain some open green spaces for future generations and wildlife. Once gone, it is lost forever and sets a precedent for further destruction of nature and biodiversity assets.
- Lot 45 provides a significant wildlife corridor for kangaroos, echidnas, koalas, monitor lizards, goannas, brush turkeys, and a huge variety of birds using the trees for feeding, nesting, transit to the remnant bush on either side, and as part of their annual migrations.
- In addition to kangaroo grazing, Lot 45 contains a substantial number of threatened native plants that are
regenerating naturally and are available for community and scientific study, supplemented by additional native plantings by local residents. - Both local and visiting humans use this land daily as a recreational space, for observing and photographing wildlife and as a track to the bush and beach. The value of the land as green space in perpetuity far outweighs the short-term benefit of the small amount of funds the Council would obtain by destroying this corridor.
- The Council currently has at least 75 residential blocks under development for human habitation in Valla Beach, whilst community green space and animal habitat is shrinking at an alarming rate.
- The council proposal states that there has been no strategic study or report on the effects of changing the land classification.
WHAT CAN WE DO?
If you wish this community land to be preserved for future generations as habitat for native animals and endangered native plants, as recreational open space by the community, and as a fire break and access by the Rural Fire Service.
