Petition For Nabisco Gluten Free Fig Newtons
The Issue
As a kid, I grew up loving Nabisco Fig Newtons. I remember, as a kid, my mom used to pack me one for lunch everyday. Every day, when I saw that yellow and purple wrapper with the graphic of that divine fig pastry on the wrapper, gleaming like a diamond out of my lunchbox, I was overwhelmed with excitement.
Nothing at school beat that "Yes! Mom packed me a Nabisco Fig Newton!" feeling. The textural synergy that the sweet fig rolled into the dense pastry possessed was scientific. I could sit there and just eat fig newtons. I would eat them all day, all night. I had at them in the car, on the train, on the weekend, when I was sad, when I had a soccer game and needed a pregame snack. Name an occasion, I brought at least one pack of Nabisco Fig Newtons
Unfortunately, in 2013, I was diagnosed with with the debilitating Celiac disease, which, for those who don't know, is a severe allergy to wheat, barley, rye, and some kinds of oats, I think. I'm always constipated because of my lacking digestive capabilities. The damage it left on my small intestine has left me chronically in pain and with a fear of most foods. And maybe, if my body hadn't been so nutrient depressed, I might have grown to six feet. Oh, and did I mention all the dollar slices and chicken sandwiches I've missed out on? Beers too. But, enough with the pity party.
I haven't eaten gluten since eighth grade; people always ask me, "what do you miss most?" and my response has always been immediately "Nabisco Fig Newtons".
I have not eaten one single Nabisco Fig Newton since February of 2013.
There have been decent attempts at gluten free imitations. Paul Newman does make a gluten free one. I love Paul Newman. Sometimes a Great Notion is a great movie and you make some of the best salad dressings. But, with the gluten free fig newtons, the ingredient limitations just don't allow them to quite meet the mark.
Nature's Bakery does their thing too. The pastry is sweet and the gooey and thick fig filling definitely make the cookie worth your while. However, still don't come anywhere near replicating the originals.
That circles me back around to this petition. As I'm sure most of you are aware, Nabisco introduced a Gluten Free Oreo just last year, and they really hit it out of the park. Because they already had the secret black and white cookie recipe, all they had to do was swipe the enriched wheat flour for a gluten free flour blend. The cookies do taste a bit crispy and burnt, but the classic filling makes up for it.
I think that, building on this new market venture, the next cookie to be given the gluten free treatment is the famous Nabisco Fig Newton. The Celiac community is constantly growing. And as more information comes out regarding the harms of eating gluten we'll only see more adapt to the lifestyle. I'd say it's the perfect time to introduce the Gluten Free Nabisco Fig Newton
I believe that with 50,000 signatures on this petition, there proves to be a large enough market for the Nabisco Gluten Free Fig Newton. I know that there needed to be gluten free dedicated facilities to produce the Oreos. Just use those factories. Over the front door you can put a nice sign like "Gluten Free or Die Tryin'" that all the gluten free factory employees tap before they help make the world a more accepting place. Like what the football players do in locker rooms tunnels.
Anyway, please, use your voice to sign this petition in hopes of an introduction of Gluten Free Nabisco Fig Newtons.
