Hello everyone,
It's been a huge start to the year. I delivered our petition to the NSW Opposition Leader, meeting with representatives from all the parties, and then a few days later it was Daniel's anniversary. Thank you all for your comments and support, I no longer feel alone in my mission to make pill testing a reality - I can see you are all with me, and it gives me so much strength.
Earlier this week, I was interviewed by A Current Affair about pill testing. They showed me some footage of young people at a music festival, openly consuming what appeared to be drugs, and other footage of people openly dealing drugs.
I want young people to understand the risks they are taking. I want them to be given accurate information, at these festivals and before them. I don't want them being targeted by sniffer dogs and police in the lines to get into the festival and panicking. I don't want them making rushed, uninformed, or reckless choices.
As I said on A Current Affair, pill testing is not a silver bullet. But it could be such a powerful tool to help save some young peoples' lives. And it is better than what we have now, which is nothing. What message are we sending to young people? That we would rather try nothing new while you take these risks? That we would rather close down these festivals than find a way to make them safer for you?
Are we so foolish to think that shutting down festivals would stop young people from experimenting? Are we so arrogant to imagine that they wouldn't go elsewhere, less visible, less accessible to harm reduction, first aid, and other services?
On Monday night, Q&A will host a special episode on pill testing. I will be in the audience, and if you're in Sydney I encourage you to be there with me. Please consider submitting a question and let the experts on the panel know that the majority of Australians already support pill testing. We don't need more debate, we need solutions.
Thank you,
Adriana.
