“Important update- a lot of things happend in the last 2 days so bare with us.
Yesterday, Sat 5/10/2019, I had an interview with 7News Melbourne about my story which has been published on Facebook and TV and also my involvement in the "Melbourne Hepatitis B declaration" signing with the leading researchers and scientists in front of 7 News (link) to call for funding to maximize diagnostics, treatments, and fast track cure for Hep B in Australia and all around the world. I was the only person representing the (affected) community and the health care consumers (while i’m facing deportation from Australia and obviously I’m neither an Australian permanent resident nor a citizen
On Friday 4/10/19, I shared my story in front of many health professionals and community participants at the International HBV forum to raise awareness about Hepatitis B and immigration in Australia. I was one of the many people who were affected by the old immigration policy to become a "burden" of the Australian public health due to me being an expensive consumer of the medication that i was using.
( * I was advised later by my other specialists that i didn't actually need the medication in all these years due to my Hep B status at a stage that i didn't actually need to have medication. To be clear, Not all people living with Hep B take medication and not all people living with Hep B will fail the health examination to migrate to Australia.)
At the panel discussion there was a lawyer who talked about the process of visa applications for permanent residency associated with hepatitis B. There was a discussion about different prices of the two main stream medications, one of which is much cheaper than the other and that would affect the outcome of the health examination differently. There was discussion about the Australia's anti-discrimination law and that immigration law is exempted to discriminate against certain group of people.
For those who's not following the story clearly, the only one reason why my visa was rejected was that i was predicted to live till 85 years old and it would cost the government around $300,000.00 for the rest of her life which is 50 more years according to the old policy and that the Medical officers of the Commonwealth (MOC) were the main people who give opinions based on a hypothetical person; given that they had sought opinions from my specialists which was ended up disregarded.
Now, what if I was sponsored for my consumption of the medication for my entire life should i ever need to go back on medication, would that take the word "burden" off the scales and get through to the Minister's decision?
After my speech on Friday, I received tremendous support from the audiences, one of them happened to be in the network with the pharmaceutical company which produces the mainstream medication for Hep b that is under Medicare Benefit Scheme ( and my story was heard with empathy). The drug company has proposed to offer me a life time supply if i was advised to take medication again. Also, among the audiences were the two professors at the Melbourne Doherty Institute appeared on the 7News interview - Ben Cowie and Peter Revill who are strong advocates for people living with hepatitis B and are fully supportive of my story.
We, on behalf of the affected community, could not thank enough to the effort of the many researches, scientists, and specialists on looking for the cure for Hepatitis B.”
