138 YEARS?? The mandatory minimum sentencing laws in Colorado must change.
The Issue
I am daughter pleading for mercy for her father, Travis Colvin. My name is Lucrecia, I am my fathers only child. My father, Travis Colvin has been in prison for 35 years for crimes he did not commit. He was sentenced under the same excessive mandatory minimum sentencing laws (138 years) as was Mr. Rogel Aguilera-Mederos (The truck driver). I recently signed a petition for Mr. Mederos, and I could not have been more proud to get my support for Clemency for Mr. Mederos, As well as I have the opportunity to publicity express my disagreement with Colorado’s draconian mandatory minimum Sentencing laws. Unfortunately Mr. Mederos is not the only one. Please, Do not stop demanding justice for others like my father, Travis Colvin who’s requested for Clemency has been pending since April 20, 2020. He has been a role model prisoner, he has countless accomplishments during his incarceration, including a college degree. And in spite of having being house in Colorado is most dangerous prison throughout all of this time in prison, he has not been in any trouble. He is currently housed in Limon correctional facility in Limon Colorado.
In the words of the former district attorney of the 18th judicial District of Colorado, Mr. George Brauchler, who recently stated, “Clemency is for people who have been incarcerated for decades, and have turned their lives around.” If Clemency is appropriate in a case where the conviction has not even been finalized (on direct appeal), as in Mr. Mederos’ case, then it should be equally, if not more appropriate in my father, Travis Colvin’s case, where the case against him involved no loss of life, and where he has demonstrated throughout his entire 30 years of incarceration that he is in no way at threat to public safety and and also where there are two other defendants in the who were convicted separately from my father for the same crime, and who told the court, under oath, that they would testify in my fathers trial , and present evidence to prove that he did not commit the crimes he stands convicted of. However, my father was unjustly denied the right to call the other two defendants as a witness at his trial because, as the Judge stated, “their attorneys would have done everything in the power to prevent them from testifying in my fathers trial while they had court proceedings of their own pending”.
Even though the constitution guarantees everyone the right to call witnesses to get to the truth, without exception for their attorneys wishes. Unfortunately, my father Travis Colvins case is a perfect example of injustices such as questionable illegal practices disproportionate sentencing that has plagued minorities in the criminal justice system for too long. There is no doubt that by having our voices heard “loud and clear,” we prevented Mr. Rogal Aguilera-Mederos From experiencing the injustices that my father has suffered from for 35 years. Don’t let Mr. Aguilera- Mederos be the end of the fight for justice. As Colorado state representative Alex Valdez recently stated on The front steps of the Colorado capital building, “we need to do something about our mandatory minimum sentencing, and we need to do it now.”
Please help me bring my father, Travis Colvin home by signing this petition, and demanding that the Colorado legislator act on Colorado‘s and unjust and excessive Mandatory Minimum sentencing laws, in a way that will affect my father, Travis consecutive sentences, and to express your support in urging Governor Jared Polis to grant Travis Colvins request for Clemency, as he is just as much deserving and mercy as Mr. Aguilera-Mederos was.
Thank you very much, and may God bless.
