As a mother, activist, and content creator, I’ve spent years sharing my parenting journey online, always with care, always with intention. But as I watched the digital world evolve, I began to feel deeply uneasy. I saw children being transformed into content, their image monetized and shared without limits, their digital footprint created before they could speak. I realized that while I chose to show parts of my own story, many children never had a choice, and their right to privacy was being erased in real time.

Every day, millions of children appear on social media, often exposed in videos and photos that may seem harmless. However, behind these posts lies a worrying reality: children have no control over their image, no rights over the revenue they generate, and even less protection against the dangers of artificial intelligence, which can exploit their content in an uncontrolled manner.

The digital exploitation of children is a growing issue. Some content-creator parents use their children’s images to generate millions of views and lucrative brand deals. Unlike young actors or models, these children have no specific legal protection, and there is no framework ensuring that the money they generate will belong to them in the future. Even more concerning, once a child’s image is posted online, it completely escapes parental control. These photos and videos can be misused, repurposed for malicious intent, and integrated into artificial intelligence databases that exploit them without consent.

Why do we need to act now?

- A complete lack of regulation → No legal framework currently protects children of content creators on digital platforms.

- A permanent digital footprint → Every photo or video shared becomes an archive accessible for life, potentially used against the child in adulthood.

- AI-facilitated misuse → Artificial intelligence can manipulate, modify, and reuse children’s images without consent, significantly increasing the risk of cyber exploitation.

- An economic model that excludes children themselves → They generate revenue for adults, with no guarantee of receiving what is rightfully theirs.

- No protection against commercial exploitation → Platforms are under no obligation to regulate or monitor the commercial use of children’s images.

Our demands: It is time to regulate children’s exposure on social media

  • Protect children’s image rights → Restrict the commercial use of their image on platforms and impose strict monetization rules.
  • Ensure fair financial regulations → Require the declaration of revenue generated from children’s content and ensure a portion is placed in a trust fund for them.
  • Establish the right to digital erasure → Allow children to request the removal of their content once they reach adulthood, with an obligation for immediate takedown.
  • Hold digital platforms accountable → Demand greater transparency from accounts monetizing children’s content and strengthen protections against child exploitation.
  • Regulate AI’s use of children’s images → Prohibit the training of AI models using children’s content without consent and enforce strict removal policies upon request.

We need your help!

The lack of regulation leaves thousands of children vulnerable to uncontrolled digital exploitation. We urge our federal and provincial governments to enact legislation to put an end to the exploitation of children on social media and protect them from current technological abuses.

Every signature is a voice demanding laws that respect children’s fundamental rights in the digital world.
