Murrieta Train Project: Establishing a Historic Train-Based Cultural Arts Center

The Issue

Growing up, my Grandpa was a cornerstone of my life. He shared stories filled with hardship and humor about his upbringing in the Ozarks. These tales are cherished parts of my life, and I believe they can inspire others in our community to learn their own family histories. One story that has been passed down for over 100 years is that of Aunt Pearl, who tragically died from TB in 1894. In her memory, we have named our nonprofit after her.

Our proposal is to place a train car at the site of the former Murrieta Train Depot and open it as our city's first cultural arts center. This will not only honor our history but also provide an engaging space for residents to connect with local culture and heritage.

Murrieta, CA has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1873 by Spanish brothers Juan and Ezequiel, with Juan moving 7,000 sheep into the valley and becoming our city's namesake. In 1882 he helped the railroad enter the valley, with the old Murrieta train depot on New Clay as an integral part of this community's development. However, the city-owned park-designated site currently sits vacant - a missed opportunity for cultural enrichment and missed landmark that could educate about our shared past. We think we ought to remind the community of what once stood at the site, at the corner of New Clay and B Streets.

By transforming this historic site into a cultural and creative arts center, we can create a hub for connecting while preserving important aspects of our past. It would serve as an educational resource where people could learn about their ancestors' experiences and how those stories shape us today, as well as a place for local artists to exhibit and share their craft. Our community NEEDS a space that is inclusive and accessible for all ages.

Let's honor Aunt Pearl's legacy as a symbol for ALL of our ancestors, by creating something meaningful out of what was once forgotten. Let's give future generations access to their roots through art and storytelling.

Please sign this petition if you support establishing a Cultural Arts Center at the former Murrieta Train Depot site.
