Multnomah County Commissioners: Protect Our Kids by Banning BPA!

The Issue

Bisphenol-A (BPA) is a widely used hormone-disrupting chemical that mimics estrogen in the human body. It’s been linked to a host of health problems, including significant behavioral disorders, obesity, infertility, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Research shows that babies and young children are most impacted by BPA exposure, and eleven states, Canada, and the European Union have already taken action to restrict its use.

Despite the hundreds of studies showcasing BPA's potential health impacts, the chemical is still used in many consumer products, like food packaging, receipts, water bottles, and most alarmingly, products meant for babies and young children like bottles and sippy cups. BPA is especially problematic in food and beverage packaging, where it can easily leach into goods contained inside.

A statewide ban on BPA in children's products here in Oregon failed in the Legislature earlier this year after industry pressure, but Multnomah County Chair Jeff Cogen is still hoping to protect consumers' health by implementing a county-wide BPA ban on sippy cups, baby bottles and reusable water bottles.

I will hand-deliver the petition with all our signatures to the five Multnomah County commissioners at their public hearing before they vote on this issue. You can also attend the meeting to show support on Thursday, October 27 at 10 am, 501 SE Hawthorne Blvd, first floor - please bring friends or your kids with you if you'd like!

Your signature and advocacy make a huge difference.  Thank you!
