Save Sydney's soul: Movement to make developers contribute to creative spaces in Sydney

The issue

Sydney is one step closer to being turned into a cultural and artistic wasteland by giant corporate property developers after a community studio space that has fostered some of Australia's most famous musicians was given notice of eviction this week.

But rather than lay down and take it, a group of determined musicians have decided to make a stand in a bid to save the musical soul of Sydney before it's gone forever, and they need your help in this David and Goliath battle against big business.

THE ECHO CREATIVE is a studio space that was built by Sydney musicians Marcus Catanzaro and Dave Jenkins. The space was independently put together by a mixture of their personal savings and crowd funding from members of the Australian Music community that saw the collective value and cultural importance for this type of space. The Echo Creative is home to a large of portion Australian writers, producers and performers as well as being a vital part of the ongoing growth of the Sydney music community. Despite the large costs involved with setting up a creative space like this, the rent for the studios was kept at a bare minimum to make it affordable and accessible to artists at all stages of their career, and all remaining debt from the build was taken on personally by both owners.

After three highly successful years, Echo have been given one month notice to vacate the property, to make way for the development of residential towers built by the MIRVAC company. This unfortunately is not an uncommon story right now. Two more creative spaces in the Sydney metro area have been given their notice to vacate for very similar development reasons.

Right now, we are calling on Miravac CEO Ms Susan Lloyd-Hurwitz to, out of goodwill, exercise corporate, social responsibility and provide a grant to displaced artists and musicians for a new community hub, which is just as important to the social and community fabric as the parks they are required by law to develop for community use. More broadly, we are calling on the NSW minister for the arts Troy Grant, shadow minister Luke Foley, and the Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore, to get behind a push to legislate developers to give something back to the cultural and artistic heart of the city by making it mandatory for developers to provide the means for displaced musicians and artists to have community spaces, the same way as they are legislated to create parks for public use within large development areas.

Artists' who have used Echo to launch or further their careers include Flight Facilities, Chet Faker, Daniel Johns, Reece Mastin, Samantha Jade, Justice Crew, Taylor Henderson, Jarryd James, Dustin Tebbutt, Gang Of Youths and so many more.

We can't do this alone. If you care about music and you care about Sydney, we need you to sign this petition, and share it among your friends!
