Dominion Resources, please donate the land to Cabot Recycling Station for our community, or uphold our 99 year lease.

The Issue

We are a non-profit government entity that is the only recycling facility within 30-40 miles of Grantsville, WV (also our county seat). We educate children in the area schools about the importance of recycling, attend county festivals with an information booth where we hand out fliers about the importance of environmental stewardship, conservation of energy, and recycling.
Many in our community support us, and more people recycle with us every month. Members of the communities we serve come to be green and bring in their recyclables, claim re-use items left here as donations by others, and some come to sell us nonferrous metals.

We have a good thing going here, and our recycling facility is one of the most spotless you'll see in the country. We are open for recycling drop-off 24 hours a day, so we can meet everyone's needs. Our patrons separate their recyclables by hand, and newcomers are easily educated by our numerous, well worded, and well placed signs. We bought a box truck, which picks up recyclables from local schools, hospitals, and businesses, twice a week. Hospitals and schools in neighboring counties are bringing in electronics and other recyclables because their counties have no recycling center, and landfilling is not the answer.

This sounds great, right? So why is Dominion rescinding our 99 year lease agreement on this land, and selling it? We have nowhere to go, and definitely do not have the $360,000 they want for the land. That's a drop in the bucket to Dominion, and wouldn't cost anything to donate the land to the community- a legitimate tax write-off.

Dominion has a charitable branch, called the Dominion Foundation, which doles out over $20 million a year to communities in which they do business, for the purposes of energy conservation, education, environmental studies, cultural events, and community well-being. What is being done to us goes against the very principles of the Dominion Foundation's mission statement, and is a slap in the face to our entire community, whose well-being, pride, and dignity depend on being able to have access to a place where they can recycle and keep their part of the Earth clean for future generations.

The Dominion Foundation

We care about the communities that we serve. We invest in communities through programs, volunteer activities and charitable giving. The Dominion Foundation, our philanthropic arm, is dedicated to improving the physical, social and economic well-being of the communities served by Dominion companies. Dominion and the Foundation annually award about $20 million to causes that protect the environment, promote education and help meet basic human needs. Foundation grants are funded by shareholder dollars and are not borne by customers.

Focus Areas
Our charitable giving programs provide energy assistance for those in need, help to protect natural resources, encourage educational excellence, foster an appreciation of diversity, and revitalize neighborhoods. We are interested in learning about opportunities to support projects in the following areas:

Meet Basic Human Needs
Food, warmth, energy-efficient shelter, access to basic medical and health care.

Protect the Environment
Protecting natural resources and helping non-profit organizations make efficient use of energy.

Support Education
Fostering an understanding of energy in our economy and helping develop the capacity of the future work force in the energy field.

Promote Community Vitality
Fostering an appreciation of diversity, revitalizing neighborhoods, and ensuring a vibrant community life through support of cultural endeavors.
