Personal to me, and resonating in the hearts of every animal lover, is the story of Max, who fell victim to a decade of brutal abuse. Despite the weight of evidence against his offender, Eli Loli, the case was disappointingly dismissed. The dismissal has rocked our community, creating a fear that winners aren't the innocent, but the perpetrators of cruelty.

Animal abuse is a severe criminal act. The connection between animal cruelty and domestic violence is well established with studies indicating individuals who have abused animals are five times more likely to commit violent crimes (Psychology Today, 2019). The dismissal of this significant case may embolden others who may think they can escape the grasp of justice.

In the beautiful state of Hawaii, we should not tolerate such maltreatment of any of our living beings. A precedent needs to be set to ensure that incidents like Max's are treated with the seriousness they deserve, and justice is served.

That is why I implore you, Deputy Prosecutor Hu, to revisit the details of this case and reopen it to bring justice for Max and to reinforce Hawaii's stand against animal cruelty. Max's story deserves to be heard, and his abuser should be held accountable. Please sign this petition and show that our community demands justice for Max.
