We submitted the petition with all 329 signatures along to the West Babylon Board of Education last night. We also gave each member a packet of resources including studies on the benefits of recess, techniques for managing behavior in the cafeteria and alternative consequences to taking away recess. We discussed current issues related to recess including the frequency with which recess is taken away in the cafeteria/as group punishment, the lack of parental notification when recess is taken away, and the importance of providing training to all school staff. Dr. Farrelly made it clear that parents who have brought concerns to building administration and do not feel they have been resolved, should reach out to either her directly or to Scott Payne, Executive Director for Curriculum and Instruction. In the coming weeks, if you see ongoing issues related to removal of recess/silent lunch we strongly encourage you to reach out to Dr. Farrelly and Mr. Payne.
