Every weekday, at Betsy Rhodes Elementary School, our children gather in the cramped confines of a portable unit. This is where the Safekey program, vital for many working parents in our community, now operates after being displaced from the spacious multipurpose room to make way for clubs. This sudden relocation has severely compromised the quality and safety of the environment our children deserve.

Currently, we have 35 to 40 students attending Safekey daily, a number that reflects both the program's value and necessity. Yet, these children face overcrowding, with no proper area to play, and worse, without immediate access to basic facilities such as restrooms and drinking fountains. Simply put, our children deserve better.

The relocation has put parents in a difficult position, as they rely on this program for affordable and dependable care. It's unacceptable that Safekey is at risk of capping student numbers due to limited space. This action doesn't just constrain activities; it limits opportunities for our children to grow, socialize, and learn in a safe environment.

We propose a reasonable and inclusive solution. We urge the staff at Betsy Rhodes to reconsider the decision and return Safekey to the multipurpose room to be shared with other clubs, or another space that can accommodate the full safekey group. By doing so, we will be ensuring that all children at Betsy Rhodes Elementary can continue to thrive in a comfortable, safe, and stimulating environment.
