Move Inauguration Day Forward When Coinciding With Martin Luther King Jr. Day

The Issue

As a parent of Black children, it's imperative for me to ensure they see that respect is duly given to the pivotal moments and people of Black history. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is one such moment, a time to celebrate Civil Rights for Black Americans. When this day, the third Monday in January, coincides with Inauguration Day (January 20th), MLK is not given the exclusive recognition he deserves.

Considering that Martin Luther King Jr played such a crucial role in advocating for the rights of Black Americans, it is only fair that we uphold the sanctity of this holiday. King’s Day is observed by all 50 US states since 2000 and offers us a chance to reflect on the progress made towards achieving racial equality since the Civil Rights Movement. We cannot let this day be overshadowed.

We are not suggesting a change to the date of Martin Luther King Jr. Day but rather a move for Inauguration Day when it falls on the same day. This will serve as a tangible sign of our nation's commitment to honoring the sacrifices of those who fought tirelessly for racial equality, such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr himself.

Thereby, we propose a requirement that, on years when Martin Luther King Jr Day falls on January 20th, Inauguration Day be moved one day forward. Inauguration Day moves forward one day when the 20th falls on Sunday, so it is reasonable to move forward  for this important holiday as well. This will ensure that both events receive the independent recognition they each warrant.
