All, this is the communication I shared with the committee today.
Good day, Members of the Pennsylvania House Judiciary Committee,
I would like to share a letter of support for HB1499 from Don Hubin, Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at The Ohio State University, Founding Director Emeritus of the OSU Center for Ethics and Human Values, and Chair of the National Board of the National Parents Organization (NPO).
His well-researched and thoughtful statement addresses several of the key considerations that arise in discussions surrounding HB1499. One point in particular stands out:
“It is worth noting, too, that parents’ concerns about losing custody of their children is a source of—not a remedy for—parental conflict. Research supports this conclusion, and independent polling has consistently shown that between 72% and 85% of citizens believe that when there is conflict between parents, awarding sole custody of children to just one parent increases that conflict.”
This perspective is important as the Committee considers how best to support children and families across the Commonwealth.
