MSA ROPS Regulations for 2016 - Creating Unnecessary Costs and a Negative Safety Impact

The Issue

2016 MSA ROPS regulations for Sprint and Hillclimb have changed to eliminate any unapproved roll over bar of a diameter equal to or less than 38mm (post 1.1.95) and any roll over bar that does not confirm to regulation K1.6.1. New bars must have a minimum diameter of 45mm or 50mm, however no approval status is required, just a stated minimum tube diameter. There are many competitors who have adequate roll over protection that have been eliminated from competing as these rule changes have been implemented without consultation or consideration of the myriad of competitors and vehicle design. The concern is that approved bars and cages have a diameter of 38mm and a wall thickness of 1.5mm, which is less than, for example, the Westfield race chassis which is a fully integral roll over bar, welded into and a structural part of the chassis, made from T45 steel, 38mm diameter and a wall thickness of 3mm. Why should these competitors grind their chassis apart to fit a bolted roll over bar of a lesser structural integrity, simply to meet this ill-considered ruling? A bolted bar will be intrinsically less safe and is a very costly, backwards step in safety. Furthermore, the MSA National ROPS Homologation Guidelines state a tested bar only needs a minimum tube diameter of 35mm - how can a tested bar be allowed to have tube diameter of 35mm but then a ruling for unapproved, random bars to have a minimum of 45mm or 50mm? This petition is to highlight the dissatisfaction of the competitors at the lack of consideration or consultation from the MSA to these rule changes and to request an amendment to the rules to include roll over bars with a tube diameter of 38mm with an unlimited production date.
