Abortion is a hot topic, to say the least. Stories of so-called "ordered abortions" have plagued UBF leaders for decades. They claim it is unfair to keep bringing up these stories. However, I will continue to bring them up because the same system that led to the abortions is still in existence today on hundreds of campuses. I can only confirm 2 abortion stories. But in my mind, two times is two times too many! UBF leaders are backing off lately, mostly due to the pressure that my friends and I have exerted on them to stop the physical and spiritual abuse. But what if I backed off? Would new abortion stories emerge since the same theology of sacrifice is being taught on over 300 campuses? Story 1 - In a coffee shop in Detroit in 2013, a Korean missionary talked with me for over 3 hours. He admitted he drove a woman in the 1980's to an abortion clinic to have an abortion. He couldn't decide if she made her own decision or if she was following Chang-Woo (Samuel) Lee's advice. But he was sad that the woman had to endure so much pressure to "give glory to God" that she felt she needed to sacrifice her unborn child. Story 2 - My family had dinner at a former UBF members' house sometime in 2012. This is a Korean woman married to an American man. The Korean woman confirmed that she read Chang-Woo (Samuel) Lee's letter back in the 1970's to a Korean couple who was hoping to be sent as missionaries to Ohio. The letter described how during the couple's "missionary training" in UBF, the wife became pregnant. Samuel Lee demanded her to have an abortion "for the glory of God" and would only send them as UBF missionaries if they did not have children. These stories are extreme, and I have not heard reports of "abortions for the glory of God's mission" lately, but the same ideas are floating around in the UBF campus Bible studies. The teaching about UBF mission is like a toxic gas, just waiting for a spark to ignite it. Sadly, that spark has lit numerous fires in the past. Might we prevent more fires?
