To Hannah,
As a resident of the Mornington Peninsula and horse owner I have recently been made aware of the Mornington Peninsula Shires decision to ban horses without consultation and or explanation from the Oliver’s Creek Bushland Reserve in Tyabb.
I understand that this is due to the presence of Cinnamon Fungus.
Whilst I appreciate the effects this Fungus can have on the bush land, I do not believe banning horses and their riders is the answer, particularly when they are not the only identified means of transmission. Signs at each entrance to the reserve clearly identify bikes and pedestrians as known vectors of the disease also.
I believe a common sense approach be taken and
I am asking that the signs be removed and stiff hoof brushes or hoof picks be provided, or requested to be provided by horse riders as a condition of entry to the reserve, much the same as are already installed at each gate for people to brush their shoes, so horses and their riders be allowed to exercise and enjoy the safety and beauty of the Oliver’s Creek Bushland Reserve, as Tyabb locals have been doing for 50 plus years! (** note bike riders are not required to take any precautionary measures to remove debris from tyres at all)
The reserve is an absolute asset to the Tyabb community and should be enjoyed by all.
Regards,
