On Wednesday night Councillor Sue Bolton put a motion to Moreland Council calling for it to reinstate full access to Aged and Disability Home Support Services for new and existing clients. She also called for an end to individual interviews that had been used to push people off the service or into hours that did not address their needs as well as for letters to be sent to be all clients telling them of these changes. Other sections of her motion, along with ammendments from another councillor, called for an independent internal review to be held into the communications involved in this debacle, for a report to be given to council in October regarding the reinstatement of services, and for a public meeting to be held regarding the future of support services given Federal and State government cutbacks. Councillors voted unanimously for the motion meaning that the onus is now on management within the council to begin undoing the damage they have already done. Given that all councillors, other than Sue Bolton and Lita Gilles (who was absent from the relevant meeting due to work), had previously voted for the cuts most of them also apologised to clients and carers for what they now admit was a mistake. Thanks to everyone who signed the petition, attended a council meeting, sent an email or assisted in some other way. Without such pressure a number of Moreland's most vulnerable residents would now be facing the withdrawal of home support at the the time they need it the most. Those involved in the campaign will now keep tabs on council management to make sure they follow through on the motion.
