"Being a carer for a child with a severe intellectual disability is a 24 hour job. Moreland Council's decision to restrict the hours in which seniors, disabled people and their carers can access home support will reduce the time we get to recharge, do household chores and spend quality time with our other children and family members. It will hurt some of the most vulnerable people in our community." Tomohiro Matsuoka
Residents who use the Moreland Council’s services were shocked to receive a letter dated 1 June 2016, announcing that after hours Aged and Disability Home Support Services would be phased out from 2 June. The letter stated that a council officer would visit clients to review needs and develop a plan to shift clients to a 7am-7pm weekdays service with the changes to be “completed by the end of 2016”.
Seniors, people with disabilities and their carers have issues that exist 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Often the alternative private services on offer are non-existent or unsuitable. The council’s home services have well-trained staff, unlike some private disability providers. Restricting the hours of access will have a negative effect on the quality of life of some of Moreland’s most vulnerable residents. This aspect of Moreland Council’s Aged and Disability Home Support Services, which only makes up a tiny part of overall council expenditure, needs to be immediately restored so that people continue to have access to affordable and quality home services based on the times that they need them the most.
Sign this petition to call on Moreland Council to reinstate access to the after-hours home service for existing and new clients, with the time and day of access to be based on when the client or their carer decides they need it the most.
