The Issue

Midvale has a glass recycling problem, and it’s time to fix it.

It’s not that people of Midvale don’t care about glass recycling—the services provided by the city make it difficult. There’s only ONE public glass recycling bin for over 36,000 residents, leaving us with no other option except paying a premium for residential curbside pickup. Meanwhile, Salt Lake City makes recycling easy with NINETEEN drop-off sites for its residents. As a result, even though glass is infinitely recyclable, the vast majority of it from Midvale ends up in the landfill, taking up valuable space. And YOU are paying for this hidden cost through your monthly garbage pick-up fees. Midvale can do better.

There is a simple and affordable solution: adding more glass drop-off bins near high-traffic locations such as schools, parks, shopping centers, and apartment complexes. This makes recycling convenient for the residents, keeps glass out of the landfill, makes it possible for local recyclers to expand and create more employment opportunities, and demonstrates that Midvale is truly committed to sustainability.

We call on the City Council to act now. If you want to learn more or wish to help, please visit utah34project.org.
