Following several years of advocacy by UNBC's 2SLGBTQIA+ community and in response to a recent article published in Over The Edge, this petition asks UNBC's President and Facilities Management to commit to more gender-neutral washrooms at the Prince George campus.

There are not enough gender-neutral washrooms in buildings 8 and 10. This leads to:

• missed class time,
• physical discomfort,
• avoiding drinking water,
• UTIs and other health problems,
• transgender people being harassed in single-sex facilities,
• feelings of humiliation and exclusion from campus life.

This issue also affects cisgender men and disabled people. Currently, the single-stall accessible washroom on the first floor of Building 8 is expected to serve a combination of men, transgender, and disabled students in a high-traffic area. This is clearly unreasonable and can be quickly, cheaply fixed with a sign change.

The solution:

• Replace the sign on the first floor women's bathroom of building 8 with a gender-neutral sign. Estimated cost: $26.
• Replace the sign on half of the women’s facilities on each floor of building 10 with a gender-neutral sign. Estimated cost: $104.
• A formal commitment to renovating current gendered washrooms into neutral facilities with floor-to-ceiling stall doors and a shared sink in UNBC's Accessibility Plan and Strategic Plan.
• A public promise by UNBC’s president to create more all-gender washrooms so that future generations of students and faculty can hold the University to its word.
