The issue

Every child deserves the chance to step onto a basketball court, join a team and feel they belong.

Chelsea and District Basketball Association — home of the Chelsea Gulls — brings players, families, coaches, referees and volunteers together. But its home stadium at Bonbeach, affectionately known as “The Nest”, has just two indoor courts.

With in excess of 7,500 games played every year and not being able to provide training facilities for our community teams.  Our community needs more space to play.

Basketball is about more than the scoreboard. It gives children somewhere to build confidence, make friends, stay active and learn teamwork. Additional courts would create more opportunities for beginners, junior and senior players, girls and women, and people of all abilities.

Two home courts place a hard limit on what our association can deliver. We need facilities that support today's players and make room for the next generation.

We welcome Council's commitment to improve the existing Bonbeach courts. Those improvements matter. However, upgrading two existing courts does not provide additional courts. Our community needs a long-term solution that increases capacity.

We call on Kingston City Council, working with the Victorian Government, Australian Government and Chelsea and District Basketball Association, to:

1. Commit to a plan for additional indoor basketball courts within the City of Kingston to meet the association's current and future needs.
2. Identify a suitable site and agree on the number of additional courts through a transparent assessment of demand, access and future growth.
3. Establish a funding partnership and publish clear milestones for planning, design and construction.
4. Secure affordable, reliable access to additional courts while the long-term solution is developed.
5. Involve the association, players, families and volunteers in planning facilities that are safe, accessible and inclusive.

We are asking for a clear commitment, a funded pathway and a delivery timeline.

Investing in basketball courts is investing in our community's health, connection and young people.
