Is online learning worth you school fees COVID19
The Issue
In the light of the global pandemic, Singapore’s first-quarter GDP fell 10.6 per cent from the previous three months we are expecting negative growth of between -4 and -1 per cent in 2020. Unemployment rates have soared all over the world and this has no doubt affected Singapore. Families are facing financial issues as people lose their jobs. Struggling with the means of affording daily necessities, families with children studying in universities still have to take into consideration hefty school fees. Even though many universities in Singapore offer financial aid, it is insufficient, and many who need help do not meet the requirements for the financial funds. With the sudden loss on income in households, I believe that most families are likely to be suffering financially in one way or another. The decrease in fees can greatly alleviate their financial burdens, especially in such trying times.
In addition, we will not be attending school and using any school amenities and resources in this period, shouldn't school fees be reduced? With a seemingly lowered cost incurred by the institution, is there really still a need to be charging students the same fees when we are doing home-based learning in such a difficult period. If anything, cost on the students end would increase in terms of electricity etc.
Top universities in Singapore have billion dollar in reserves, which generate millions in investment income a year, as they continue to top the class when it comes to raising funds. Hopefully Universities will be able to help students in times of need by lowering tuition fees.
