The Issue

For over 12 years, we, the residents of Great Houghton, Barnsley have been living with a persistent issue that is affecting our daily lives and the safety of our community. The speed humps on our main road have become more than just an inconvenience; they are a hazard. Despite numerous attempts to communicate with the council through emails, texts, phone calls and social media complaints about this issue, we feel unheard and ignored.

These speed humps were initially installed to slow down traffic and increase safety. However, they have proven to be more vehicle-unfriendly than anticipated. They cause damage to vehicles passing over them at irregular speeds and can potentially lead to accidents due to sudden braking or swerving.

We believe that there are alternative solutions available which can ensure both the safety of pedestrians and smooth passage for vehicles. In other parts of UK such as Wiltshire and Kent, councils have successfully implemented 'speed cushions' which are considered more vehicle-friendly while still effectively slowing down traffic (source: Road Safety GB).

Therefore, we urge Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council to take immediate action either by modifying these speed humps into a safer design or removing them altogether.

We request fellow residents of Great Houghton who share these concerns about our village's main road safety issues caused by these speed humps to sign this petition so that together we can effect change in our community!
