For years, the youth of Wingham have lacked a safe and modern place to practice skateboarding, scootering, and BMX riding. The current skate park facility, located in Railway Reserve, poses significant safety hazards due to its outdated and worn-out infrastructure. It is crucial for the safety of our community members, especially our young people, that we take immediate action to modernize this facility.

In 2024, the MidCoast Council adopted our MidCoast Skatepark Strategy, which contains a detailed action plan for improving existing skateparks. This ambitious strategy highlights the need to decommission the current Wingham Skatepark, which is no longer fit for purpose, and construct a new, district-level skatepark in the Railway Bridge Reserve. This project has been short-listed as a priority but unfortunately continues to be neglected, leaving the community without a solution.

A modern skatepark would not only provide a safe and accessible environment for skating sports but would also become a vibrant community hub, promoting health, fitness, and social interaction among residents of all ages. This investment in our community's infrastructure is long overdue and would reflect our commitment to the well-being and development of our youth.

Studies have shown that when communities invest in recreational facilities, youth engagement increases, antisocial behavior decreases, and overall community well-being improves. Furthermore, modern skateparks adhere to the latest safety standards and accommodate diverse skill levels, making them inclusive environments for everyone.

We urge the MidCoast Council to prioritize the development of a modern skatepark at the Railway Bridge Reserve as outlined in the MidCoast Skatepark Strategy. By supporting this project, you will be directly contributing to a safer and more vibrant community in Wingham.

Please sign this petition to show your support and help us create a safe, secure, and inspiring space for the youth and community members of Wingham.
