Petition to Modernize Ohio's Nuisance Wildlife Laws: Choose Compassion Over Cruelty
To: The Ohio General Assembly and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources
Ohio's wildlife deserves better.
For decades, many animals classified as "nuisance wildlife" have been trapped and killed simply because they are trying to survive in habitats that humans have dramatically reduced through development and urban expansion.
We are asking Ohio lawmakers to modernize our wildlife policies by replacing unnecessary lethal control with humane, science-based solutions.
We call upon the State of Ohio to:
Revise nuisance wildlife laws to prioritize humane, non-lethal management whenever possible.
Expand trap-neuter-return or other appropriate sterilization programs for species where they are effective and practical.
Increase the use of oral rabies vaccination bait programs to reduce disease risks through prevention rather than killing.
Strengthen penalties for the intentional abuse, torture, or needless killing of wildlife, including raccoons, skunks, opossums, foxes, groundhogs, and other animals commonly labeled as nuisance species.
Invest in public education that helps homeowners peacefully coexist with wildlife through exclusion methods, habitat modification, and responsible wildlife management.
Wildlife is not our enemy.
Raccoons are highly intelligent, curious animals capable of forming strong family bonds. Opossums provide valuable ecological benefits by consuming thousands of ticks each year and helping control many garden pests. Skunks naturally reduce grub populations that damage lawns. Foxes and groundhogs also play important roles in maintaining healthy ecosystems.
These animals are not invading our homes out of malice. They are adapting to landscapes where forests, fields, and natural habitats continue to disappear.
When an animal seeks food, water, or shelter, it is responding to the environment we have created.
Ohio can lead with compassion instead of cruelty.
As taxpayers and voters in 2026, we believe our public resources should support humane wildlife management, disease prevention, conservation, and education—not unnecessary suffering.
A civilized society is measured by how it treats its most vulnerable living beings. We can protect public health, property, and wildlife at the same time.
We respectfully ask Ohio's elected leaders to update our nuisance wildlife laws to reflect today's knowledge, today's values, and a commitment to humane coexistence.
