Modernize New York State Campsite Regulations for Hikers and Cyclists
The Issue
"Its time for some New York State (Campsite) Redistricting"
I run a bike touring company (718 Outdoors), and conducting trips throughout the picturesque landscapes of upstate New York is a passion of mine. However, the current campsite regulations imposed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation present a significant bottleneck, affecting not only my business operations but also many outdoor enthusiasts who prefer cycling and hiking as their primary modes of exploration.
Currently, these regulations permit 6 individuals, 2 vehicles (with no limitation on size), and 2 tents at each campsite. However, herein lies an inconsistency: the same 6 people are not allowed to each use individual one-person tents. This policy seems outdated, a remnant from a time when camping was primarily about car travel and larger groups using hefty family tents. It inadvertently favors those with more vehicles while denying equitable camping access to individuals with lighter footprints – the hikers and cyclists.
This is not a push to restrict vehicle access but rather an appeal to modernize our camping rules to reflect today's diverse camping practices. Allowing each person in a group of six to use single-person tents does not increase the impact on the campsite. It maintains the spirit of eco-friendly camping while promoting inclusivity for everyone who wishes to explore the wilderness without a car.
Consider this: according to the Outdoor Industry Association, the number of people participating in cycling and hiking has seen a significant increase over the years, particularly in the post-pandemic era as people seek socially-distanced recreational activities. It is only fair that regulations evolve to accommodate this shift. By modernizing these rules, not only are we supporting economic activities like my bike touring business, but we also encourage more people to experience the magic of New York's outdoors sustainably.
I urge the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to review and amend these policies, allowing 6 individuals the flexibility of using 6 one-person tents if they choose, regardless of their mode of travel. This is a call for inclusivity in outdoor recreation and a necessary change to align our practices with the current era. Please sign this petition to support a more accessible and modern camping experience for everyone in New York.
