Modernize Kenwood Academy's Pool: Improve Safety and Facilities for All

The Issue

Dear Principal Calloway,

As a Kenwood Academy HS (KAHS) Bronco community member [faculty/staff/alum], I support the CPS Kenwood Academy HS (KAHS) Aquatics Dept 2023 Capital Improvements Projects. These projects, once completed, will be great for our KAHS Bronco community, Hyde Park, and Historic Kenwood community by providing our Broncos and the public with a completely new and modern aquatics facility in a safe space for all to enjoy.

The proposed project would demolish KAHS's 55-year-old worn and outdated natatorium, rebuilding it and providing the school with a new regulation-size pool (25-yards) in place of our current 20-yard pool, a diving board, an upper-level spectators deck, new boys/girls aquatic locker rooms & shower stalls, much-needed climate control, and a new Aquatics office. All of the previously listed improvements are needed for the continued academic and athletic success of our Bronco community. The current conditions of Kenwood's Natatorium are undesirable to our current Broncos and an unwelcoming sight to any visitor. These improvements would help boost interest and participation in aquatics among the Broncos while supporting classroom instruction when swim class is a part of the curriculum.

This modernization would be money well spent. It would allow our Broncos to hold swim meets and competitions and offer pool rentals to the public; earning the school revenue for needed repairs, upgrades, and school/student activities and functions. During the school’s downtime, the pool can be incorporated into the neighboring park district programs [Learn To Swim, Open Swim, Family Swim, & Aquatics Fitness Classes], benefiting the public as well.

The KAHS Aquatics 2023 Capital Improvements Projects is a great project for Kenwood Academy HS, our Broncos, and the Hyde Park and Historic Kenwood communities, providing a much-needed, long-due resource; a public pool.

Sincerely,

A KAHS Bronco Community Member
