Modernise the 1984 Dental Act: Empower the Whole Dental Team to Improve Public Care

Modernise the 1984 Dental Act: Empower the Whole Dental Team to Improve Public Care
The Issue
The 1984 Dentists Act is outdated and is preventing modern, accessible, preventive dental care for the public — especially for children and care-home residents. Dentistry has evolved enormously since 1984 (digital tools, teledentistry, preventive methods like silver diamine fluoride), but the law still ties us to old systems that prioritise regulation over care. The current framework limits what dental teams can do, discourages prevention, stifles innovation, and restricts access for those who need it most. We want a new Dental Health Act that empowers the whole dental team, embraces modern technology and prevention, improves access for all, and supports better oral health outcomes nationwide. Sign to update the law so all dental professionals can deliver safer, more effective, modern care to the public.
