Across Mississippi, animal shelters are facing a heartbreaking crisis. Rising inflation and economic instability are forcing families to make unthinkable choices—many are having to surrender beloved pets simply because they can no longer afford to care for them. As a result, shelters across the state are beyond capacity, with staff and volunteers stretched to the limit and animals at risk of being euthanized simply because there’s no more room.

This isn’t just a crisis for animals—it’s a crisis for communities. Families who love their pets should not be forced to give them up because of temporary financial hardship. And shelters, many of which are underfunded and understaffed, shouldn’t have to bear the burden alone.

We are calling on Mississippi state lawmakers, city leaders, and local governments to act now. Emergency funding must be allocated to support overburdened animal shelters and to create community-based solutions that help keep pets with their families. This includes financial aid for pet food and veterinary care, funding for temporary pet fostering programs, and expanded support for low-cost spay/neuter clinics.

The situation is urgent. Every day that passes, more animals arrive at shelters that have no space left. We have the opportunity—and the responsibility—to help families stay whole and to prevent unnecessary suffering.
