Highway 19 Nanoosebay Flats Safety & Alternative Route

The Issue

Nanoose Bay Flats. A scenic part of our highway system that has a history of nasty accidents.

If you have traveled this main arterial highway connection between nanaimo and parksville, otherwise known as The Nanoose Bay Flats or Highway 19, this is a dangerous piece of highway.

Upgrades that were done several times over the years really havenot made the highway safer.

If you area  daily commuter or  heavy transport truck operator, or courier that uses this stretch of highway, you should  be prepared to endure some unexpected delays.  Note that there are no other routes to use and you will be stuck in the bottleneck and congestion that these accidents cause.

I am proposing three solutions

1)  Build an alternate route starting at ware road and ending at northwest bay road south of  parksville and just right near the fuel service station at the south end of northwest bay road, nanoose to fairwainds community artery.

 2) Establish a warning system to avoid bottlenecks and congestion. Overhead signage digital speed limit signs and digital billboards. (Emergency warning app for truckers)

 3) Designated trucking route only for registered commercial  and  heavy freight transport trucks. This would mean the upgrades of the logging roads to be able to handle the large amount of  commercial and heavy freight transport trucks on a daily basis.

The safety solutions are going to be expensive, but not as expensive as an alternate route, however it must be done.
