Legalise Homeschooling started this petition to Ministry of Education - Υπουργείου Παιδείας

The whole of Cyprus was in an unprecedented situation in the spring of 2020, when the coronavirus pandemic broke out. Schools closed, but classes continued with distance learning. However, this situation gave many parents a great opportunity and insight into their child's learning methods and skills on a whole new level and clearly proved to both parent and child that a one-to-one focused and calm environment is one in which their child strives in the most.

Cyprus is near the bottom of the European educational leagues and compulsory schooling is not proving successful. From 2017 until today, the Ministry of Education has had three ministers; the faces have changed but the problems remain same and are only escalating: http://www.reporter.com.cy/local-news/article/719581/mia-karekla-treis-ypoyrgi-oi-aperges-i-ggafa-olkis-kai-to-pazl-ton-thranion

The surprising breakthroughs with homeschooling, however, has been a relief to parents, but they now worry those advancements could be lost when schools reopen. The Ministry of Education is still reluctant to give exemption from school, even in cases where children are clearly at an advantage of learning at home.

Roughly 2 million children currently learn at home with homeschooling being embraced and supported by many government officials, scholars, college officials, and employers. For an article of links to various research on why homeschooling not only works but is favorable visit this link. Not only does it indicate that children excel educationally but also socially, something that has always been a popular misconception.

For many children on the autism spectrum, with special needs and/or learning difficulties the period of ''allowed'' homeschooling during lockdown proved exceptionally convincing of its benefits to their general well-being and progress. An example of this is a 10 year old boy on the autism spectrum living in Cyprus with a comparison of writing after 4 years in school and after 4 weeks of lockdown and can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/unitedspectrumpsychology/posts/1501810176650646 The photos speak for themselves and the fear of regression with the compulsory return of school is real and very justifiable.

Not one child is the same nor learns or develops at the same rate or way, yet The Ministry of Education insists on limiting them to a one-size-fits-all system. With the option of homeschooling it would provide a relief of smaller classes and options for parents who can and want to homeschool their chrildren.
