SENZA METROPOLIZ NON E’ LA MIA CITTA’!

L'intreccio di relazioni, lo scambio culturale e la sperimentazione sociale che da oltre 10 anni animano l’ex fabbrica Fiorucci in via Prenestina 913, trasformandola nel bene pubblico Metropoliz- la nostra città meticcia- non possono essere sacrificati in nome e a vantaggio della proprietà privata. Per questo intendiamo chiamare con decisione chi, in questi anni, ha sostenuto e attraversato a vario titolo questa esperienza a una corresponsabilità collettiva per fermare l'ingranaggio dello sgombero, messo in moto dalla fredda macchina burocratica del risarcimento proprietario.

Come può, infatti, il colosso Salini Impregilo, oggi Webuild, avanzare diritti su questi ettari contesi con pervicacia ad una manciata di abitanti provenienti da tre continenti, ai bambini e alle bambine che ci sono nati, alla barricata d'arte del MAAM cresciuta nel tempo in osmosi complessa con i residenti e gli attivisti impegnati quotidianamente nella gestione dell’intero manufatto? Come può Roma privarsi di questa sperimentazione riconosciuta e apprezzata anche a livello internazionale senza immaginare di restare più povera culturalmente? Come può la città, in piena emergenza Covid, provare a cancellare uno spazio che ha garantito la tenuta sociale e sanitaria di centinaia di persone, assicurando in piena autonomia anche la continuità scolastica a decine di minori?

Siamo convinti che questo pezzo di città e di storia capitolina si collochi esattamente dentro le trasformazioni globali e dentro quelle che solcano questa metropoli, dentro il meticciarsi di una società in movimento che ripensa come comuni, e preziosi, anche e soprattutto spazi e luoghi che sono considerati inutili e improduttivi se non in un'ottica di speculazione e rendita future. Lo stesso sarebbe stato per l'area dell'ex Fabbrica Fiorucci dove, nei desiderata di Salini, doveva sorgere l'ennesimo plesso commerciale ed edilizio. Invece, il percorso iniziato nel 2009, e portato avanti tra molte difficoltà ma con tanto coraggio, determinazione e fantasia, ha trasformato un relitto industriale in una Città Meticcia che è tanto difficilmente riproducibile quanto necessaria per pensare questa città come spazio vivo e rigenerabile a partire dai bisogni di chi la vive, e non come una terra di conquista per rendita e consumo dei suoli.

Il troppo spesso evocato, e troppo poco praticato, cambio di passo enunciato da chi amministra Roma si deve sostanziare in un passo in avanti determinato, in uno scarto impetuoso da parte del Comune e della Regione, delle istituzioni preposte alla salvaguardia dei beni comuni verso il riconoscimento dei bisogni delle comunità territoriali e di una idea di rigenerazione urbana come pratica di dignità e non come testa di ponte della gentrificazione e del profitto.

Il dono e l'impegno di tante persone hanno fatto sì che Metropoliz oggi abbia l'aspetto che ha. Dentro questo orizzonte, anche la proprietà deve riconsiderare le sue richieste di risarcimento per il mancato sgombero. Tutto ciò non è risolvibile con una prova di forza muscolare, ma con l'intelligenza collettiva di una città che sa misurare l'importanza dei luoghi e del loro destino rigettando il dogma della grande proprietà come “bene divino e intoccabile”. Al gruppo Salini chiediamo l'unico atto di alto profilo ora possibile: cedere alla collettività questi pochi ettari del suo immenso patrimonio, lasciando questo bene comune all'uso di quel mondo che lo abita, che lo disegna e lo attraversa continuamente, che ama perdercisi e crescerci dentro.

E’ necessario che la proprietà e le istituzioni facciano un passo indietro rispetto ai progetti calati dall'alto in un territorio già pesantemente provato dalla speculazione edilizia e rispetto all’ennesimo tentativo di far prevalere la proprietà privata sopra ogni altro diritto fondamentale, per fare un passo avanti a una città che ha già pagato a caro prezzo la rapacità della rendita e la violenza della crisi.

WITHOUT METROPOLIZ, THIS IS NOT MY CITY!

The entanglement of relations, the cultural exchange and the social experimentation that have been going on for over ten years in the former slaughterhouse Fiorucci, in 913 Prenestina street, and that have transformed the factory into Metropoliz – our Mestizo City -, cannot be sacrificed in the name, and on behalf, of private property. For this reason we resolutely call those who, during these years, have supported and crossed this experience in their different capacities to collectively cooperate into blocking the eviction machine, which is fuelled by the cold, bureaucratic engine of private compensation.
We cannot help but asking ourselves how could the former corporation Salini-Impregilo, now WeBuild, advocate contentious rights over this piece of land, which was renovated by a group of inhabitants who come from three different continents. We cannot but ask ourselves how Salini can compete for this land with the kids who were born here, with the Museum of the Other and the Elsewhere’s (hereby MAAM) barricade of art, which is in an osmotic, complex relationship with the residents and the activists who daily engage in nurturing its infrastructure. And how can Rome give up on such an experimentation, which is acknowledged and appreciated also abroad, without becoming poorer culturally speaking?
How could Rome try and erase a space which, during the pandemic emergency, has guaranteed social cohesion, grassroots welfare and healthcare, school continuity to dozens of pupils, fully autonomously and without any kind of institutional support?
We believe that this piece of city, and Rome’s history, fits inside global transformations, as much as inside those that characterise this metropolis. It fits into the becoming mestizo of a society which moves and rethink former urban vacancies, empty and seemingly non-productive spaces as common, and precious ones, outside of the logic of prospective speculation and estate. The latter would have been the fate of the former Fiorucci factory as well, since Salini was planning to build another residential, and commercial, complex. Yet, in 2009, a new path started, and it was carried on amid plenty of difficulties, yet with a lot of courage, determination and fantasy. This path has transformed an industrial relict into a Mestizo City that can be difficultly replicated, yet it is necessary to think about this city as a lively space which can be regenerated starting from the necessities of the people who inhabit it daily, and not as a conquer land for real estate and soil consumption.
Too many times local institutions have evoked, yet not realised, a change of gear in this direction. At this point, we believe a radical one is needed by the City Council and the Lazio Region, alongside the institutions designated for the protection of commons, in the direction of acknowledging the needs of local communities, and an idea of urban regeneration that should be a dignifying tool, and not a spearhead of profit and gentrification.
The gift, and commitment, of many people have made Metropoliz into what it looks like nowadays. Against this backdrop, even the owner ought to reconsider his requests for being compensated by the State because of the non-executed eviction. This situation cannot be resolved with a forcible showdown; it has to be dealt with by deploying the collective intelligence of a city that is capable of assessing the salience of its places’ destiny, thus rejecting the dogma of private property as an untouchable good that trumps every right. We also demand to the Salini Corporation to undertake the only high profile, possible action: giving up on property rights over these few hectares that would not surely affect their enormous estate, but that would yet leave this common to the use of those who inhabit it, of
those of who have been designing, crossing and changing it completely, to those who love to lose themselves, and grow up, inside it.
It is imperative that the property, and the institutions, take a step back over the top-down projects that would fall in a neighbourhood already consumed by real-estate speculation.
They need to take a step back from the latest attempt to make private property trump each other fundamental right. They need to make a step back to make a step forward towards a city which has suffered because of the real-estate rapacity, and the violence of the ongoing crises.
