MB Minister of Health, Reproductive Health Care ... IS ... Health Care!

The Issue

TO ALL MANITOBANS!

In Manitoba Reproductive healthcare isn't currently acknowledged by the MB health minister as part of their responsibilities as ... health minister!

1. Since taking office in 2016, all Ministers responsible for the Department of Health have directed all questions on reproductive health, including abortion services, to the Minister responsible for the Status of Women.

2. The Department of Health and Seniors Care controls the provincial reproductive health budget and should be accountable to the public on issues of reproductive health, because reproductive health care is health care.

3. This inconsistency wastes the time and resources of reproductive health organizations who must direct their questions to a department that does not control their funding.

4. On January 5, 2021, the Provincial Government appointed two new Health Ministers, neither of whom claim to take responsibility for reproductive health.

5. Reproductive health is not exclusively a women’s issue – all Manitobans have reproductive healthcare needs.

Dear Minister Stephanson,
Excluding reproductive health as part of your responsibilities as Health Minister is unacceptable. Women’s health is fundamentally your responsibility as the Health Minister and pretending otherwise is overtly discriminatory.

By actively avoiding your responsibility to women's reproductive health, you put the health and wellbeing of all women and girls who live in Manitoba in direct jeopardy. This is absolutely shameful.

We petition the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba as follows:

1. To urge the Provincial Government to direct the Department of Health and Seniors Care to immediately take full responsibility for all matters regarding reproductive health.

2. To urge the Provincial Government to direct the Minister of Health and Seniors Care to be accountable to the public and to the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba by answering all questions regarding reproductive health.
