The mandatory teaching of BIPOC Artists in The Ontario Arts Curriculum

This is a petition to ask that it be a mandatory part of The Arts Curriculum that teachers teach about BIPOC artists.

It is suggested in the curriculum that teachers teach about BIPOC artists but is not mandatory, leaving the decision up to the teacher.  As we don’t all have the same backgrounds, we are not all subject of the same view of the world and its history so leaving this variable open to each person can lead to our children only getting half of the information.

The curriculum states ‘In an inclusive education system, all students see themselves reflected in the curriculum, their physical surroundings, and the broader environment, so that they can feel engaged in and empowered by their learning experiences.’ This is an ideal teaching environment but only if actually applied to our classrooms.

We ask that it be a mandatory part of the Arts curriculum that teachers teach about BIPOC artists. Canada has an incredibly rich history with both the Indigenous and Black community it is only right that that be shared as well. We would ask that a list of artists be provided as a mandatory base resource to teach about and recommend that you consult with Black and Indigenous artists to create this.

Thank You.
