Support me as a teacher to provide LGBT inclusive SRE

Support me as a teacher to provide LGBT inclusive SRE

The Issue

It is not compulsory for all schools in the UK to teach Personal Social Health and Economic (PSHE) Education and Sex and Relationships Education (SRE), and the increasing numbers of academies and free schools in England are under no obligation to teach these subjects.

Young LGBT people are more likely than their non-LGBT peers to experience poor sexual and mental health, yet even where SRE is taught, there is no requirement to make it relevant to LGBT young people, or to talk about same sex relationships or gender-variance. This does great harm to young LGBT students who can feel alone, ignored and unprepared for their developing social and sexual life.

Many great teachers want to provide good PSHE and SRE but they are not being backed up by suitable and up-to-date guidance, or by space on the curriculum.

As a teacher I am signing this petition to say:

- I want to be supported to teach PSHE and SRE which is relevant to my LGBT pupils through proper Government commitment and updated guidance;

- I want the Government to ensure that my school and all others have to include LGBT inclusive PSHE and SRE on their curriculum.
