The Issue

Growing up, attending Millville Public School was more than just receiving an academic education; it was about feeling safe, supported, and a part of a community. As a former student, I vividly recall the moments when our general education social workers acted as a lifeline—helping students navigate through personal issues, family challenges, and mental health struggles. Today, I fear that this crucial support system is at risk.

Millville Public School Board has proposed budget cuts that would result in the reduction and relocation of general education social workers. This decision could potentially leave countless students without the emotional and psychological support they desperately need. According to the American School Counselor Association, the recommended ratio is one social worker per 250 students. Reducing these positions could extend the current ratios far beyond the recommended, compromising the quality of support that students receive.

The role of a school social worker extends beyond just counseling. They are integral in crisis intervention, substance abuse prevention, and even aiding in academic advice. Their presence has proven instrumental in reducing absenteeism, decreasing disciplinary issues, and improving overall student achievement. These are outcomes documented by [reputable sources like the National Association of Social Workers](https://www.socialworkers.org

Cutting social worker positions not only affects the students in terms of support but also lessens the chances of identifying and addressing issues early on. This might lead to longer-term problems that could have been mitigated with timely intervention.

We urge the board members of Millville Public School to reconsider this decision for the well-being of our students. It is imperative that the board reflects on the broader impact such cuts could have on the school community as a whole.

We have a responsibility to ensure that our children receive a holistic education, inclusive of their mental health and well-being. Let us preserve the invaluable support of our general education social workers. Sign this petition and support the call to safeguard our students' future.
