Say NO to radioactive drug facility in Millburn NJ

Say NO to radioactive drug facility in Millburn NJ
The Issue
KEEP OUT an industrial manufacturing plant using radioactive materials from opening up in our residential neighborhood!
Advanced Accelerator Applications ( http://www.adacap.com) has been unanimously approved by Millburn Township Planning Board to open a facility that manufactures a drug utilizing radioactive material at 57 Willow Street - against residents’ wishes.
Advanced Accelerator Applications (AAA) develops, produces and commercializes diagnostic and therapeutic Molecular Nuclear Medicine products.
While many residents of Millburn fully support the research and development of so much needed drugs, we also strongly believe that facilities utilizing radioactive material belong to an industrial park rather a residential area.
East Willow Street is only step away from establishments frequented daily by our children including schools, parks and gyms. No matter what safety measures are taken, acts of God, human mistakes and accidents will always present a risk in a residential area.
Last township meeting on Sep 1, 2015 showed how many residents are concerned and outraged about this situation. We are still waiting to receive a coherent response from our Mayor, Township Committee, and members of the Planning Board as to why this decision was made and present a comprehensive contingency plan by AAA in case of an emergency including but not limited to: how much this plan will cost the town and how it will assure our and our children's safety.
· The building is located in a "above average flood risk for the Essex county area" and we all remember the aftermath of hurricanes in Millburn, especially in that area. We would not want to add radioactive waste to it.
- Daily transportation of radioactive material and waste will pose a higher risk even in case of routine traffic accidents
- Risk that AAA will start producing more potent drugs than currently planned or larger quantities pose additional concerns
- Why do we need this hazard in town? Why can't AAA choose a facility in an Industrial Park, far from schools, shops, parks and homes?
These are some important questions, but so far we have no answer from our elected representatives!!! We expect our town elected officials to answer these and other questions and explain the rationale behind their decision. And if the answers are not satisfactory they MUST act and fix the problem they have created.
If you share our concerns, please sign the petition. Every voice is important – together we can make a difference.
