Demand Milford Schools take action against Racism
Demand Milford Schools take action against Racism
The Issue
Recently, allegations of a culture of racism, homophobia, sexism, and transphobia have been made against Students and Faculty of Milford School District. These allegations are exemplified by the actions of three Milford Students in the Class of 2022. The event will be described below to demonstrate the importance of the situation.
A has surfaced which appears to show 3 Students at Milford High School engaging in Blackface. The video is being recorded on a cell-phone in February of 2020 and shows a private snapchat story of one of the students in question. The video depicts the 3 students engaging in Blackface with captions joking about the actions including "Now she Black" and "I got the N-word Pass". Milford Schools was notified of the video on June 11th.
Following the discovery of this video, an account was created called "dearmevsd" or Dear Milford Schools. This account details anonymous stories submitted by current and former Milford Students about prejudiced actions taken by other students and faculty. The account has garnered widespread praise by the students of Milford and been acknowledged by Milford School District. However, until this point Milford has failed to take public action against the students involved in the Blackface Event and merely vaguely stated they intend to improve in the future.
Milford Schools can no longer be a place that harbors hatred against significant portions of its student population. The vague statements by The Milford School District are not enough to end this culture prejudice which is present in both the Students and Staff of the High School. The students involved in the Blackface Incident should be suspended or expelled and Milford needs to address the actions detailed on the Dearmevsd account. Milford Students and Parents shouldn't have to deal with these types of actions/statements, we need direct action NOW.
