Today, Missouri’s faith leaders met with the advisory council of Governor Eric Greitens. Their ask: to commute the death sentence of Marcellus Williams.
Up to this point, the governor has turned a deaf ear to Marcellus’s lawyer and local groups fighting for his life, and for his freedom. That’s why today, leaders from different faiths came together in an attempt to win the governor’s attention. But they’re not pleading for Marcellus’s forgiveness, instead, they’re advocating on behalf of his innocence.
We believe that Missouri’s criminal justice system has deep racial disparities when it comes to arrest and incarceration rates. We believe that much work has to be done to right the wrongs that occur as a result of those disparities. We believe that Marcellus Williams is an innocent man, and we believe that the commutation of his death sentence can start Missouri on the track of righting those wrongs.
If you believe this too, we’re asking you to help us today.
So far, our asks to Governor Greitens have gone unanswered. But if we speak loud enough, he will have no option but to listen. That’s why we need you to call him today and convey this message:
“Governor Greitens, I’m asking you to commute the death sentence of an innocent man, Marcellus Williams. This is an opportunity for the country and the state to know that Missouri does value black lives. ”
You can reach the Governor’s office by calling: (573) 751-3222.
Please take a moment today to give the governor’s office a call – a moment of your time may mean the difference between life and death for Marcellus, who is scheduled to die next Tuesday.
