Microwaves For Students

The Issue

Students who bring lunch from home are directly affected by the lack of access to a microwave during lunch hours. Many of us rely on homemade meals due to dietary needs, family preferences, or financial reasons. However, without a way to reheat our food, we're forced to eat cold meals or, in some cases, skip lunch entirely. This not only affects our physical health and energy levels but also impacts our ability to focus and learn throughout the day.

If this issue remains unaddressed, students will continue to face unfair and unnecessary obstacles during their school day. Having access to a microwave is a basic need that’s already met for teachers and staff—but not for students. By providing monitored microwave access, we can ensure all students are treated with fairness. If nothing changes, more students will miss out on proper meals, leading to long-term effects on well-being, academic performance, and inclusivity.

This is a simple, achievable solution that can make a big difference right now. The school already has microwaves in staff areas, so it’s clear the infrastructure exists. No one should be punished for bringing food from home. It's time to fix this and take action to ensure every student has the right to a warm meal.

*** While this petition advocates for student access to a microwave, we also recognize the school’s budget limitations. Regardless of whether a separate microwave is approved, students should not feel discouraged or denied access when respectfully requesting to use an existing microwave.
