Gun violence continues to devastate Michigan families—from Oxford High School to Michigan State University. In response, the Michigan Gun Violence Prevention Task Force has released a comprehensive, research-backed plan to reduce gun violence and save lives. But none of these life-saving policies will matter unless the state legislature acts.

We urge the Michigan House of Representatives to immediately pass the full set of recommendations put forward by the Task Force, including bans on ghost guns and assault weapons, closing dangerous loopholes, requiring waiting periods for all gun purchases, and raising the minimum age to buy firearms to 21.

These aren’t partisan ideas. These are common-sense measures developed over the past year by a diverse group of medical experts, law enforcement leaders, educators, tribal leaders, and violence prevention advocates. Their message is clear: incremental change isn’t enough. We need bold, urgent action.

Some of these recommendations—like bans on bump stocks and ghost guns—have already passed the Michigan Senate. But the Republican-controlled House has so far refused to take them up, despite overwhelming evidence that these devices make shootings deadlier and harder to trace. With firearms now the leading cause of death among children and teens in the U.S., delaying action is unacceptable.

Governor Whitmer and Senate Democrats have shown leadership in passing earlier reforms like safe storage laws, universal background checks, and red flag orders. Now, the House must do its part. Every day of delay means more lives at risk.

We call on House Speaker Matt Hall and the Michigan House of Representatives to bring these recommendations to a vote and pass them in full. Michigan cannot afford to ignore the experts—or the grieving families calling for change.
