Since our last update when the Online Safety Bill was put on pause, we’ve been busy calling on the new government to make sure it returns and that when it does, it addresses violence against women and girls!
As we gear up for the Bill's return to parliament in early December and await details of the changes that new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and the Culture Secretary have made to the Bill, will you join us in calling on the new Prime Minister to make sure women and girls are protected online?
While we welcome the government’s promise to strengthen online safety for children, protections must work for children's gendered experiences of online harms. We know that girls are facing a national crisis of sexual harassment and abuse - ranging from cyberflashing to image-based sexual abuse, rape threats and the constant pressure to send nudes. These are gendered experiences and require a gendered and intersectional response.
Over the last few months, there have been whispers that the new Government may weaken the Online Safety Bill overall, in the name of ‘freedom of expression’ - leaving women and girls in a worse position than previously anticipated. But freedom of expression is not the freedom to abuse, and as long as this abuse goes on, women and girls will continue to be silenced online.
Please help us keep up the momentum by continuing to share this campaign with your friends, family and networks!
We’ll be back in touch with an update when the Bill returns to Parliament. The time to influence this new law is now - so please take two minutes to show your support!
Thanks as ever for all of your support and solidarity.
