Demand the University of Manitoba and ICM decrease Tuition Fees for Winter 2021

Demand the University of Manitoba and ICM decrease Tuition Fees for Winter 2021

The Issue

We are living in strange and difficult times, the world has become unrecognisable. People are losing jobs, opportunities, and loved ones. Students make up a huge portion of our society, students aren't JUST young adults there are single mothers, single fathers, elderly, all kinds of people pursuing education at different stages of their lives. Being in the midst of a pandemic, people are struggling to put food on their tables, pay bills, mortgages etc. Furthermore, education has shifted to remote learning meaning students do not have access to or limited access to resources they normally would such as printing, books, counselling, academic advising, recreational services, etc. So then why and how is the University of Manitoba/ICM justifying a tuition increase in the midst of these troubling times? Why are students being charged for services they no longer have access to? Remote learning is the safest option but it is not optimal for everyone and just isn't the same. Students have had to purchase additional equipment to be able to attend their courses and write exams. Students have had to drop courses past the drop-course deadlines due to the change in course handling and have not been offered refunds, why? We demand that the University of Manitoba/ICM seriously reconsider amending tuition fees for the Winter 2021 term and till the pandemic is not affecting people as heavily for both domestic and international students. We demand that they remove charges for services that are no longer accessible to students and even offer refunds. We urge the University of Manitoba to open up more room for discussion about student affairs, letting everyone have a say so that there is more understanding about concerns of different demographics in the student population. As an educational institution, it is their RESPONSIBILITY to not make this pandemic a more difficult time for students but rather find ways to help where they can. Join us by signing this petition in asking the University of Manitoba to significantly lower tuition fees for the coming Winter term. These issues might not apply to you but they do to a lot of your course-mates, people working 40-60 hrs a week to be able to afford tuition and textbooks. Let's stand united. IF the University of Manitoba fails to meet these demands or fails to open up a dialogue, we will push for a tuition strike for Winter Term 2021. This tuition strike means that students will not pay their fees as a united front until a conversation is started. STAY SAFE, HAPPY AND BELIEVE IN YOUR POWER.
