Zoning Public Hearing Oct 20 9:30am
The Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners (BCC) have scheduled the Calusa Z2021000031 hearing for Oct 20th, 9:30 am (in person only no zoom) downtown at the Stephen P Clark Center. We need STRONG community attendance and speakers. Please save this date, attend and speak to advocate for protecting our community! The proposed application is still a 550 single family home gated development with no community benefits or park.
Update on wildlife in Calusa:
Please see our website www.savecalusa.org for details on the confirmed presence of the federally endangered Florida bonneted bat and the Calusa Rookery! Florida Fish and Wildlife added the tricolored heron colony nesting in the Calusa Rookery to their database of imperiled wading birds last week! We have valid concerns with the environmental surveys provided by the applicant and that appropriate consultation from Fish and Wildlife has not yet been provided.
What we want - HEARING DEFERRAL:
We are asking that the BCC DEFER this Oct 20th hearing until the applicant provides full wildlife utilization and obtains consultation from Fish and Wildlife. It is absurd that the BCC would consider making a decision on appropriate zoning for this property without understanding critical wildlife utilization! Why didn’t the applicant document this during the nesting season this year before this hearing? Residents deserve a public hearing AFTER this information is provided to the County and Fish and Wildlife.
